When Wisconsin was first settled it was surveyed into townships. Each regular township had 36 Sections. Each section could be broken down into ½ sections or ¼ sections or even smaller parcels of land based on the needs of the townships and the landowners. As Wisconsin grew some areas of townships became more heavily populated and the residents chose to become incorporated into Villages and Cities. As a result, there is both a Saukville Township and a Village of Saukville.

The Town of Saukville is the predominantly rural area that surrounds most of the Village of Saukville. The Village of Saukville is located in all or portions of eight sections in the south-east corner of the old Saukville Township. The Village of Saukville has their own Village Hall, Police Department, Fire Department, tax levy and Village Ordinances. The Township of Saukville is served by the Ozaukee County Sheriff and has a contract with the Newburg Fire Department for fire protection. The Town of Saukville has a Town Hall and is governed by a Town Board.
