The purpose of the Plan Commission is to enforce the Zoning Ordinance of the Town and make land use decisions. Under s. 60.62 of the Wisconsin State Statutes, the Plan Commission has been granted authority to exercise village powers. Village powers allow a town to act for the public health, safety and welfare of the town, using the broad powers granted to a village under sec. 51.34(1), unless a different procedure or requirement is set out for towns. It is the function and duty of the Plan Commission to make and adopt a master plan, a blueprint of future growth needs, for the physical development of the municipality. The Plan Commission is currently planning for 2035.
Some Plan Commission meetings include a public hearing. The purpose of a public hearing is to give the public an opportunity to express their views on a given topic and to provide evidence in support of those views. Plan Commission relies on this input when making recommendations. Plan Commission recommendations are then forwarded to Town Board for consideration
The Plan Commission meetings are open to the public, as are the meetings of most public agencies. Wisconsin law states all government meetings and records should be open to the public unless there are compelling reasons to keep them closed.
There are five (5) citizens on the Plan Commission and two (2) Town Board Supervisors. Members are citizens of the town appointed by the Chairman. Members are appointed for three (3) year terms.
When an owner of a parcel wants to build a new structure, change zoning, divide property, apply for a conditional use, etc., the owner will go in front of the Plan Commission to answer any questions the Plan Commission may have and give an overview of their request. The public is then allowed to make their statements.
Plan Commission meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month and begin at 7:00 p.m. Public Hearings proceed some Plan Commission meetings.
